Rheinmetall has been awarded a contract by the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Utilization of the Bundeswehr to deliver the Laser Light Package for the "Special Forces Assault Rifle Bundeswehr, light". The contract includes the production and delivery of 1745 sets of the Laser Light Package and has a value of around five million euros. Delivery will begin in the first quarter of 2019. In a very short time, Rheinmetall was able to win a significant initial customer for its newly developed Laser Module "Variable Tactical Aiming Laser (VTAL)".
The VTAL is the core component of the new Laser Light Package. This extremely hardened and compact system has been specifically developed for use on modern short assault rifles. Each set also includes two separate weapon lights, the "Lumenator" - a standard version with a dual LED head, and a "Rescue & Recovery" version - as well as various accessories such as cables and tactical switches. Typically, the VTAL and one of the two weapon lights are mounted on the weapon. All devices come from Rheinmetall Soldier Electronics GmbH in Stockach.
The waterproof, lightweight, and sturdy metal housing of the VTAL features an integrated MIL-STD 1913/STANAG 4694 interface. The VTAL protrudes only about 25 mm above the mounting rail, so it does not interfere with the sight line of optical sights. The VTAL offers an extremely powerful red visible aiming laser, a near-infrared aiming laser, and a near-infrared illuminator. The superior quality of the light beams and their uniformity enhance the operator's situational awareness in all operational environments. The VTAL is compatible with all common night vision devices. The fully integrated laser block is factory-aligned, making it easy to adjust on the weapon.
Due to the modern design of the device, the operator can set the intensity of the two aiming lasers using the color-coded cable switches. The illuminator can be focused using a separate rotary knob. The VTAL can also be connected to other tactical weapon lights - like the Lumenator - and operated using a combined 2-button cable switch.
The hardened design offers stability and reliability. The system can withstand the harshest conditions on the battlefield and is waterproof up to 30 meters, ensuring the operator's readiness at all times.
